Hawaiian Sling vs Pole Spear
First off, a Hawaiian sling or pole spear is basically the same thing with different names. The only difference is normally a pole spear has a grip which slides with the pole. It’s a tool used to go spearfishing. Here in Hawaii we commonly call it a three-prong because it has 3 prongs on the end of the spear pole. It’s normally made of fiberglass and has a rubber tube at the end.
A Hawaiian sling/pole spear / three prongs are normally used while freediving along the shoreline or near reefs. It’s super convenient to use and carry around which is why it’s very popular here in Hawaii.
With Hawaii being surrounded by a reef it’s a cheap and inexpensive way to begin spearfishing.
Also using a Hawaiian Sling is very lightweight and to get started you’ll just need a good pair of fins, dive mask, snorkel and your trustworthy hawHawaiian sling/pole spear.
It’s a great entry level tool for spearfishing. Normally dive shops or fishing shops sell them. You can also purchase them online and they run way cheaper than a cheap speargun.
Although a lot of freedivers use spearguns at times they will carry a hawaiian sling or pole spear as a backup. Sometimes attaching it to their spear float.
If they are out in the ocean spearfishing and anything happens to their spearguns or spear rod they can simply swim back to their spear float, unattach the hawaiian sling and continue spearfishing.
Hawaiian Sling
So here is a picture to get you a visual idea of what a hawaiian sling looks like. It’s basically a pole usually made out of fiberglass or carbon fiber with a speartip attached at one end and a rubber sling attached to the other end.
They normally run 5-8 feet but you can find them smaller and bigger. Some spearfishing enthusiast likes to modify their Hawaiian sling to make it even longer.
The smaller Hawaiian slings are great when diving into tight areas.
How to shoot a hawaiian sling
Shooting a hawaiian sling or pole spear is quite easy. Grab the rubber tube and stretch it towards the speartip, while firmly gripping onto the pole and stretched rubber aim and let go of the spear to fire the shot.
Pulling the rubber too far down towards the spearhead will cause the pole to bend and be inaccurate when shooting or aiming at fish.
Be sure to put enough tension to get a nice shot but not so much as to where the pole spear starts to bend.
